There is more and more people living in the cities, which creates strong pressure in terms of quality of life and sustainable development. Therefore, smart city managment is one of the most demanded tasks for local authorities.

Smart cities combine sustainable development and quality of life, thanks to the original use of data and technology. The standard ISO 37122 » Sustainable Cities and Communities — Indicators for Smart Cities, helps city and local governments to be more effective in this regard. This new standard, published in May 2019, sets out a number of key indicators while making recommendations for possible measurement methods.

The idea of ISO 37122 is simple: That which is not measured can not be improved. This is why the standard focuses on methodologies for more effective measurement of sustainable development indicators. What is the result? Cities receive reliable data on their effectiveness, which can be compared with other (international) cities. City governments can find innovative solutions for all kinds of present and future problems faster, ranging from overpopulation, political and economic instability, to climate change. The new standard is part of the ISO 37100 series of standards for sustainable cities and communities. The ISO 37122 standard complements the ISO 37120: 2018 standard «Sustainable cities and communities — indicators of urban services and quality of life».

Together they provide a consistent approach to what to measure in cities and how best to do it, which affects social, economic and environmental sustainable development. It is important to note that ISO 37123, «Sustainable Cities and Communities- Indicators for Sustainable Cities, which focuses on risk management for cities, will be published in 2020. The System of International Certification offers all interested parties to get certified according to this standard and get the necessary advice on sustainable urban development.
